Ever wonder why some bloggers get hundreds of thousands of viewers from Pinterest every month, while others get zilch?
Well, today I’m going to show you is that much of what makes certain bloggers successful, and other not so successful, comes down to laying the right foundations on Pinterest from the start.
Doing this the right way will set you and your blog up for success, hopefully for years to come…
Doing it the wrong way can leave you spinning your wheels for months (or even years) before you see any meaningful traffic.
In this post, I’ll be showing you exactly how I plan to set up a new account for success…
From the basics of opening a new account to doing keyword research up front, setting up your profile, to cleverly naming your boards to get exposure right away…
In fact, I’m going to show you exactly how I’m going to set up the new Pinterest account for the new blog in the beauty & skin care niche that I’m starting.
My plan is to grow it to $10,000 within 12 months as I announced in my case study here.

While I don’t claim to be an expert on Pinterest, as I’ve grown the majority of my blogs through Google SEO, and never really paid attention to Pinterest.
Of course, that’s all going to change now that I’m embarking on this case study to grow a brand new site to $10,000 per month using Pinterest traffic.
However, for one of my blogs I happened to have followed the exact strategies I will outline below when first setting up the corresponding Pinterest account.
This blog currently gets between 200-400 visits a day from Pinterest (it gets many more from Google).
Although this is nothing to write home about, as many bloggers get much more traffic from Pinterest, the funny thing is that I hadn’t touched this blog and its Pinterest account for over 2 years…
In fact, I never really paid much attention to it, other than getting the foundations right as I describe below.
Just by setting everything up right, I’ve been getting around 200-400 visits per day for over 2 years now on autopilot.
If that’s not a good reward for spending a few hours setting everything up right, I don’t know what is…
So, now that we have that out of the way, let’s get into the meat of it.
1. Set Up Pinterest Account Before Having Content
The first thing you should do before you even create any content on your blog is to create your Pinterest profile.
I can’t stress this enough…
Many wait until they have 10-20 posts ready on their site, but in this case study, I want to start growing my Pinterest account as soon as I can.
My goal is to start building up my profile, get into the good graces of Pinterest, and start getting some momentum right away.
I don’t want to waste any of this precious time.
The more mature my Pinterest account is, the higher the chances of getting exposure to my content once I start getting my content ready.
2. Set Up a New Pinterest Business Account
We want to make sure that Pinterest knows that we mean business (pun intended!) and that we take our blogging and content creation extremely seriously.
Make sure that you avoid simply converting your personal account, even if you already have followers.
It’s best to start completely from scratch and grow our account that way so that we can develop our account for the keywords that we will blog about in the future – and there is no confusion with Pinterest.
Converting your personal account will end up muddying the waters.
Since my new blog in this case study will be about beauty and skin care, when Pinterest asks me during the creation process what my blog is about, this is what I’ll select.
3. Claim Your Website
The next step is to make sure that you claim your website.
This, again, is to show Pinterest that we’re legitimate and are unique content creators – which is what Pinterest loves.
To get a detailed overview on how to do this, you can read this guide by Pinterest themselves.
Once you’ve done that, you should get a confirmation from Pinterest within 24 hours saying that your website has been claimed.
Congratulations, your website is now “Pinterest official”…
4. Add Most Relevant Keywords To Display Name
Now comes the fun part…
Optimizing our Pinterest profile for the keywords that we are going to target on our blog.
Since I’ll be starting a blog in the beauty (and more specifically skin care) niche in this case study, I want to be optimize everything that has to do with my Pinterest profile around relevant keywords that relate to beauty & skin care.
To find the most relevant keywords on Pinterest, all we need to do is type in the broadest keyword in our niche and see what other keywords Pinterest comes back with.
In our case, this will be “skin”…
Pinterest gives us a list of relevant keywords that are most relevant to the search term “skin”.
Note that some are not relevant to our niche, such as Painting and Photography.
We can simply ignore those.
I also recommend typing in a few variations of your keyword, and scrolling to the right, to make sure you get a good feeling for what your audience is searching for on Pinterest.
Make sure you start jotting down important keywords that you come across.
We’ll need those for later.
Once you feel like you have a good idea, we want to marry this keyword research with the ultimate goal that our audience ultimately wants to achieve, and put that into our display name.
In our case, this would be something like this…
Skin Care Tips for Clear, Glowing, and Healthy Skin
Clear, Glowing, and Healthy skin is the ultimate goal and “want” of our audience.
This is what they dream of achieving, and this is what underlines the entire purpose of our blog and Pinterest account.
This is why it’s crucial that we mention these keywords in our “Display name”
You might have to play around with it a little bit as there is a 65 character limit in terms of how much information you can put in there.
5. Add Relevant Keywords to "About Your Profile"
In the section about our profile, we’ll want to repeat the keywords above, but also go into a bit more depth on keywords.
More specifically, I like to bring in some pain points that our audience has.
These pain points is what is currently standing in the way of our audience, and prevents them from achieving their ultimate goals and wants.
This is what will incentivize our audience to take action (ie. click on our pins, go to our website, read our articles, buy our products).
As such, it’s crucial that we include those keywords as well…
For the beauty and skin care niche, a little bit of brainstorming will tell you pretty quickly the types of problems our audience has in terms of achieving their goal of clear, glowing and healthy skin.
Typing in “skin” into the Pinterest search bar, and scrolling a bit further to the right I’m starting across all the pain points are having.
Folks are struggling with dry, acne, and oily skin.
As I search further, I also run into wrinkles, blackheads, acne, oily skin, dark spots, stretch marks, and the list goes on.
I’m going to incorporate as many of these keywords relating to pain points, and the main keywords, and put them into the “About Your Profile” box.
This will make sure that Pinterest absolutely has no doubt as to what my profile, and ultimately the content I will create, is about.
Again, we’ll have to be a little bit clever about how we word it since this time we only have 160 characters available to use.
And this is what I’ve come up with…
I’m trying to fit as many relevant keywords into my description, but I still want the content to flow naturally.
6. Use Keywords to Create Relevant Boards
Now it’s time to start creating separate boards around some of the main keywords.
I’ll start by creating 4-5 boards around sub-topics that I think I’ll going to start covering first once I start to produce content for my blog.
I’m going to start by creating boards around the main pain points my audience is experiencing, because this is will what spur them into action.
1. Naming Your Boards
It’s important that the board names that we choose are guided by the same keyword research process we did above.
The biggest pain points had to do with dry skin, acne, oily skin, and blackheads – so this is what my first 4 boards will be about.
Let’s start with dry skin.
In order to optimize the name of the board, I’m going to follow the same keyword process and type “dry skin” into Pinterest to see what comes up.
Now we get a list of search terms that are frequently searched for together with “dry skin”.
When I name my boards, I’d like to go at least one level deep like this to make sure I’m specific enough and that Pinterest really knows what my board is about.
I’m going to go with the keyword “remedies” and name my first board “Dry Skin Remedies”, as this will be a good topic to start writing about on my blog later.
If I had wanted to talk about dry skin on people’s face specifically, which is another one of the suggestions that come up, I could have just as easily created a board called “Dry Skin on Face”.
I will keep those in mind for potential future boards.
2. Creating Your Board Description
We’ll create the board description in much of the same way we came up with the description of our profile.
You probably get the idea by now, but the first thing we do is go back to see what Pinterest recommends in terms of keywords by typing in “dry skin remedies”.
As per usual, our trusty old pal’ Pinterest gives us a list of the most frequently searched for keywords when it comes to dry skin.
Like we did with the description of our profile, I’m going to try and incorporate as many of these as I can for my board description.
The good news is that for the board description we have a little more wiggle room in terms of the total amount of characters allowed.
The description I came up with is as follows, which will capture the majority of keywords:
Natural, homemade, and DIY dry skin remedies for when you have dry skin on your face, hands, legs, arms or feet. This board will share articles and tips on how to get rid of extremely or severe dry and itchy skin, eczema, and dry skin in winter – through natural ways (such as shea butter, coconut oil or baking soda) or through more traditional means (such as through moisturizers, lotions, and oils).
3. Selecting the Correct Category
Lastly, before we finish off the creation of the board, we want to make sure that we pick the correct general category.
In the case of beauty & skincare, as is the case with my blog, I selected “Hair and beauty” to make sure that Pinterest knows exactly what my board is about.
4. Repeat this Process with Another 3-4 Boards
I will repeat this process for another 3-4 boards to make sure that my profile is sufficiently populated to get started on saving some pins.
7. Populate Each Board with 5-6 Relevant Pins
Now that we have our first boards set up, I’m just going to populate them with a few 5-6 pins each so that they don’t look so empty.
I’m going to make sure that each of these pins is super relevant to the topic of each of the boards.
This, once again, reaffirms to Pinterest exactly what the board is about and will help us rank for keywords in the future.
Ideally you’ll want to select popular pins that have a lot of repins as well.
This is content that is already proven and doing well on Pinterest, so you pinning it on your board only helps you build some early relevance while your account is still new.
8. Create a Board for Your Blog Posts
Next, you want to create a board that will specifically house your blog posts.
This will make it easy for folks that visit your profile to find your post and pins, and perhaps more importantly, for you to be able to find back your pins in the future.
Simply name it “Best of [Your Blog Name]”.
Trust me, stuff will get messy after a while if you don’t.
9. Don't Bother Creating Board Image Covers
I know a lot of bloggers out there that will recommend spending a lot of time on creating blog covers.
While that’s all nice and dandy and certainly makes your profile look pretty, I don’t believe it’s something that moves the needle significantly in the early stages.
I recommend spending your time on the other steps listed in this guide, and only once you’ve started gaining some traction you can start making covers for your boards.
10. Enable Rich Pins
Now onto the some of the more techy stuff… good old Rich Pins.
You might be wondering, what on earth are Rich Pins?
Here is a quick summary from Pinterest directly:
Rich Pins add extra details to Pins and update important information from the websites they came from. If something changes on the original website, the Rich Pin updates to reflect that change.
There are three types of Rich Pins: product, article, and recipe. Product Rich Pins show the most up-to-date price, availability, and product information right on your Pin. Article and recipe Rich Pins will update to reflect any edits you may make on your site.
In layman’s terms, Rich pins enable Pinterest to pull information directly from your website ensuring the information they’re showing to their audience is consistent with what is on your blog.
It’s something they came out with a little while ago, and whenever Pinterest comes out with something new, it’s in our best interest to get it implemented right away.
Pinterest (and other social networks for that matter) tend to reward users that adopt their new technology with greater visibility – so that’s exactly what we’ll be doing.
Step 1: Download the Yoast SEO Plugin for WordPress
The bad news is that if we wanted to implement Rich Pins by hand we’d need to get our hands dirty with coding.
Since I’m not a big fan of that (nor am I able), we’ll need to do it a different way…
Thankfully, the Yoast SEO plugin for WordPress features allow us to get Rich Pins set up fairly easily.
The best part is that it’s free.
Simply log into your WordPress dashboard, go to Plugins, and search for the Yoast SEO Plugin, and click “Install Now”.
Once that’s installed, Yoast will add the correct code to your WordPress so that you’re able to apply for Rich Pins.
Step 2: Apply for Rich Pins
Now, you’ll want to go to one of the posts on your site, copy the URL and paste it into the Rich Pin Validator on Pinterest.
Since I don’t have any real posts on my site yet, I’m simply going to use the “Hello world!” post which comes standard on any WordPress blog when it has just been set up.
This should work fine for this purpose .
Of course, as you develop your site you will delete this standard post – but the beauty is that your site is now approved and all your pins will update as well when you change anything on your site going forward (such as your favicon, site name, etc…)
11. Upload a Personable Profile Photo of You (or Your Persona)
Most will tell you to upload a headshot of yourself – and while I agree – this simply isn’t possible or comfortable for all of us.
While I agree that a headshot is more personable and relatable than a picture of your blog’s logo, it’s just not always feasible to use a picture of yourself.
Given that I’ll be creating a website as a male about beauty and skin care, it’s probably not in the best interest of the site to use a picture of myself (although I do happen to have very smooth skin).
Instead, I’m going to be using a persona for this website for the time being to get the ball rolling, and I’m going to be using Deposit Photos to select a model that fits the bill.
If we need to, we can always change course later.
The most important thing here is to select a picture that looks somewhat natural and realistic – unlike the vast majority of stock photos which look very fake.
And there she is…
Presenting to you the face of my new beauty and skin care blog, that I will eventually grow to $10,000 per month in this case study.
12. Follow the 10-20 Main Pinterest Influencers in Your Niche
Now that our profile is populated and looks somewhat realistic, it’s time to follow the main Pinterest influencers in the beauty & skin care niche to create more relevance on Pinterest.
To do this I simply type in “skin care” into the Pinterest search box, but instead of searching for “pins” I look for “people” instead.
Now it’s just a matter of looking at which profiles have a lot of followers, clicking into them to verify whether they are authentic, and seeing whether they are getting a good amount of monthly viewers.
As you can see, the particular influencer I’ve highlighted above has about 27k followers, and when we click into her we see that she has a lot of monthly viewers as well.
In fact, she has a total of 9.8 million monthly viewers – which is insane!
Not only is this a good person to follow to give our account relevancy within Pinterest, it’ll show us exactly what type of content works well on Pinterest in our niche and can be a source of inspiration for us as we start to brainstorm content ideas in the future.
13. Follow Some of Their Followers
Once you’ve followed the main influencers in your niche, you can follow some of their followers.
You don’t want to go crazy on this, but following a handful of them every day will help you build up your followers as well as part of them will follow you back.
The good news is that these followers will likely also be interested in the content you’re going to be posting in the future as they have already expressed an interest by following the influencers in the niche.
These are exactly the types of people you want following you as well.
The one thing you want to make sure is that you’re following real accounts.
For each account that I follow I do a quick check to make sure tat they’ve set up their profile, added profile picture, and basically that they’re a real human being.
